Oh dearest bunnies, I come here with a tale most dire. My scarlet red, huge 'n' sleek, love of my life laptop has finally done the inevitable. In a word: conked. A couple of months after the expiry of the warranty, the motherboard shut down permanently. This leaves me with the option of returning an uninsured, warranty free laptop to the swine at Toshiba, who have the cheek to pretent to be the purveyors of quality electronic merchandise, though the opposite is now apparently true. The bloke at the repair shop drew in breath through his teeth when I took my baby out from her sexy carry-case. "Ah! This Toshibah - crahp lahptohp... 60 pahcent repaihs I do, I do on Toshibah lahptohp". Like, shit. So, Xmas is rolling around, and I'm gonna justify the purchase of a new, better, more reliable laptop. If any of you bunnies think you know where to guide my questing eye on this search for affordable quality, pipe up now. Those bunnies who think that Linux is a good idea would probably be most qualified to deal with this problem Remember, I am looking for a pretty beefy system that will run Guildwars smoothly, play music loudly, be able to deal with work for Uni, be good for watching DvDs, and have the ability to store hefty amounts of data. I am prepared to spend a little over a grand to make sure that this one really lasts. A warranty of two years is probably also a good idea >_O

That sucks Can you retrieve what's on the hardrive at least? I can't imagine loosing all the stuff I have stored on there... If you've had problems before while it was on warranty you might be able to convince them to refund something... worth a try I guess. For a new one I recommend Dell. I bought mine after an IT friend recommended them, telling me her firm uses them as they are the most reliable, and its been running smoothly for over a year now. It has a nice big screen for films, a good graphics card for GW, and decent enough speakers. It has survived boiling tea poured into it, my cat sleeping on it, various flights and trips by train where it has been shaken and banged around. I only have one problem, and that is a flaw in the screen which a techie friend tells me is dead pixels that make a thin yellow line going vertically down the right side, but I can live with that. I'm told it happens to all flat-screens often. I love my pretty silver spare brain!

Toshiba? They forge laptops these days? *shakes head* For gaming, Asus or yeah, Dell is an option. Be sure to have a good integrated vidcard though - anything that's not nvidia or ati/amd are out of question. Be sure to check the options for further upgrades too: how many memory slots it has, what's the max memory capacity, etc. For a cpu... forget anything that has "celeron" or "sempron" in it.

This is all invaluable advice... I would never have considered Dell... I always heard that they were pretty awful. I was thinking along the lines of Acer or HP.
Keep those hints coming!

I know what that feels like... when I built my desktop I foolishly controlled my hdds through an onboard raid controller. Recently my mother board died on me. 450 GB of anime and music... gone... all gone...

According to Rob, my housemate who knows about such things, my stuff is certainly retrievable. Thank the gods I will still have access to Green Wing, South Park, Monkey dust and Samurai Jack Oh, and all the music and Emulated games. Oh, and those 50 gigs of internationally banned porno.

All is now well. The new laptop has arrived, and runs Guildwars like a dream. That's all that counts
